SOME THINGS THEY NEVER TELL YOU IN RESUMES

Michael was a cheerleader for three years at The Ohio State University, including the year they won the Rose Bowl and the National College Football Championship in 1968-69. The Ohio State cheerleaders also were champions, the top-rated university squad. Michael subsequently served as co-captain of that cheerleader squad and earned his “Varsity O.”

Michael's performance skills, which earned him a National Thespian Award while in high school, also enabled him to work his way through college by traveling three states performing acrobatics and magic as a professional clown and skating in "Holiday on Ice.”

For 12 years, he volunteered as on-air talent for a public television station in Denver, CO, motivating donors to call in their support during pledge drives.

Not much has changed. Michael is still a national champion and performer – in fundraising. His middle initial still stands for "Extrovert”. He’s still a winner in front of a crowd, and he still inspires the enthusiasm and commitment of others. Every campaign or program that has provided the recommended campaign budget, and staff and volunteers followed through using the recommended action plan, has come in over goal and under budget.

SAMPLES OF PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • The MIDAS Consulting Group was engaged by the Nevada Museum of Art (NMA), the only accredited art museum in the State of Nevada, to conduct a feasibility study on the potential associated with funding needed to build a new museum in Reno, Nevada. Subsequently engaged as campaign counsel, Michael worked with the NMA staff and volunteers in organizing and implementing a campaign for an initial goal of $17 million. That goal has greatly exceeded; the NMA realized more than $22 million in fulfilled commitments, including a $10.5 million foundation grant.

  • Assessed and revived a $22 million capital campaign that was stalled at $700,000 to fulfill a unique partnership between Bishop Manogue Catholic High School and the University of Nevada, Reno. It was determined that in their efforts to build a new high school campus at a new location and for the university to acquire the former high school’s campus, the MIDAS assessment determined that they were approximately $10 million shy of what they actually needed for infrastructure to complete the overall project. A campaign plan was provided by MIDAS and the campaign went on to exceed its new goal of more than $30 million, including efforts by Michael to work with the newly hired Director of Development to increase a commitment from an individual for a significant naming opportunity from $50,000 to $1 million.

  • Resurrected a capital campaign for what was then known as the Colorado Christian Home. By conducting an interim campaign assessment which identified the need, among other things, for the organization to change their name to reflect their mission and multi-state audience, as well as consolidate their two campuses into one at their historic site.

Michael worked with the committee and suggested the name “Tennyson Center for Children and Families,” which was subsequently approved by the committee, the staff, and the Board to be adopted as the new name of the organization. The study infused a sense of confidence that at least $3.5 million and as much as $5 million could be secured – even after board members had lost confidence in capital fundraising in general and their former consultant.

The MIDAS Consulting Group was engaged as campaign counsel to assist the development staff and volunteers in their effort., The first $3.5 million was secured in nine months after solicitations began.

Successful philanthropic grants were written by MIDAS for $1.15 million, including a $500,000 challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation – on of the first grants made in Colorado by that national foundation. The campaign exceeded its $5 million goal with direction through Michael's role as MIDAS counsel, as well as staff and volunteer follow through in implementation.

In mid 2002, MIDAS was asked to come back and complete a new feasibility study testing the new campaign goal of up to $30 million and provide initial campaign counsel for that effort until an expanded Development staff was in place.

  • Provided a strategic assessment and recommendations to revitalize a $150 million campaign for Iowa State University that had stalled at $70 million. After implementation of those recommendations and effecting other strategic and tactical changes suggested by Michael Blimes, the campaign eventually exceeded $220 million.

  • Organized the first comprehensive, centrally managed fundraising effort to consolidate nine autonomous college programs at Colorado State University. This effort resulted in a 61% increase in giving over the previous record high to realize $8 million in the first year, and a 47.5% increase to realize $11.8 million in the second year. CSU was awarded the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) gold medal for the most improved public university program for those results.

  • Revitalized a capital campaign for The Children’s Hospital Foundation in Denver. The campaign had been dormant for several years, with only $700,000 in commitments. Working with only two volunteers, Michael managed the campaign which resulted in $3.2 million being committed in 13 months, thus meeting the contract objective and exceeding the $3 million goal.

  • Organized and managed the first marketing-oriented approach to major gift solicitations at the University of Minnesota Foundation, which achieved #1 ranking in the nation by the Counsel for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) for giving to public universities during his tenure as the Director of Major Gift Clubs and Current Giving and member the Foundation’s core management team.

  • Authored More Dialing, More Dollars, 12 Steps to Successful Telemarketing, a top-selling book published by the American Council for the Arts through a grant from the Gannett Foundation.

  • Authored "A Capital Idea – Building A Campaign On Reality Rather Than Rhetoric; On Performance Rather Than Promise" for an issue of the national 501(c)(3) Monthly Newsletter

WORD ON THE STREET

"Thank you very much for the excellent workshop and volunteer training you presented to our Board of Trustees. The material was well developed, timely, and appropriate for the group.

Of course, the workbook of slides was an excellent handout to take home and review throughout the year.

(Actress) Betty White remarked on the clear, thorough, and common-sense approach you outlined for the major gifts process. Coming from one of our most dedicated, generous, and long-standing volunteers, this is high praise, indeed.

Thank you, again, for a superb job."
